JOEL NAFUMA REFUGEE CENTER

Serving the needs and aspirations
of refugees and asylum seekers

THE JNRC IS A DAY CENTER FOR REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS TO RELAX,
LEARN AND RECEIVE ADVICE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS.

We are located in the crypt of St. Paulโ€™s Within the Walls Episcopal Church in the heart of Rome, Italy.

The JNRC offers services from basic supplies,
a relaxing atmosphere, legal and social advice, employment support,
to language and skills courses, for nearly 150 people each day.

Using a holistic approach, we seek to address both the urgent needs of those just arriving to Rome, as well as the needs of those seeking to settle in Rome.

The Joel Nafuma Refugee Center is not financially supported by or connected to any government. Most of our operators are volunteers, here to help you, give you information, and support you during your life in Italy.

Our Services

  • Having a good handle of certain languages is often the first necessary step on the journey of achieving ones goals for many of our guests. That is why we have Italian classes, for those who are searching for jobs here and who seek to settle down, but also English, German and French.

  • In our Supply Room we make available a range of clothes and sanitary products, that Guests can take for free at various time intervals.

  • One-on-one or in groups, therapy - be it formal or just a chance to open up - can represent a crucial opportunity to heal wounds and prepare oneself for the future

  • Drafting a CV is one of the first steps of many in the process of getting a job.

  • The JNRCโ€™s mission is to provide the necessary basic assistance for refugees and asylum seekers to overcome immediate challenges and have the necessary tools to create a stable situation for themselves.

  • The JNRC has a long history of humanitarian aid mostly due to its position in the crypt of St Pauls Within the Walls. It was in the 1980s that this spot evolved from being known in the migrant community as hospitable to becoming a center with increasing services and outreach.

  • The JNRC is made up of long term staff members as well as a team of volunteers and interns from all over the world, all of which are dedicated and passionate about the work they do. This dedication grows at the JNRC, whoโ€™s environment is friendly and dynamic.

Other than being a day center for refugees and asylum seekers, the JNRC also runs a Service Learning Program oriented towards student groups.

Service Learning is an outreach and awareness raising program. By educating about the history of the term โ€œrefugee,โ€ its social and legal connotations, the program seeks to widen peoples understanding of what it means to be
a refugee. Creating an open discussion about this topic brings us, as a society, one step closer to fully embracing diversity.
